May 7th 2008 - Second Book Club

The second meeting of Book Club was a little confusing. We all had good intentions of coordinating the second meeting but some wires got crossed and we ended up meeting in two different places on two different day. It's OK though. A new person came and she was an alumni of my class at the UW iSchool. It was great to catch up with her and fun to share books too.

Books discussed:
If Not for The Cat: Haiku - Prelutsky, Jack. Children's picture book of poetry. She had recieved as a baby shower gift and just loves it.
A Splendid Friend Indeed - Bloom, Suzanne. Children's picture book. Summary:When a studious polar bear meets an inquisitive goose, they learn to be friends.
Just Listen - Dessen, Sarah. Teen Fiction. Like the movie "Say Anything" I also saw this mentioned on my GoodReads teen group. Summary: Isolated from friends who believe the worst because she has not been truthful with them, sixteen-year-old Annabel finds an ally in classmate Owen, whose honesty and passion for music help her to face and share what really happened at the end-of-the-year party that changed her life.
The Runaways - Vaughan, Brian K. Teen graphic novel. Great for reluctant readers.
Ellington Was Not A Street - Shange, Ntozake. Children's picture book about a little girl who grew up with Duke Ellington and his contemporaries visiting her house.
Ruby Sings the Blues - Daly, Niki. Children's picture book. Ruby has a loud mouth and everybody wants her to be quiet until she learns how to sing.
Sidewalk Circus- Fleischman, Paul. Wordless picture book. A child imagines everyday people doing circus-like feats.
Adele and Simon - McClintock, Barbara. Children's picture book. A sort of "Where's Waldo" where you look for a lost scarf throughout the story. It takes place in Paris and features many famous landmarks.

Book Club Premiere

Wednesday April 9th was the premiere meeting of a new Book Club. It has no name except "Book Club" but the focus is on children's books (including picture books) and teen books. Six people showed up including a children's librarian, a teen librarian, a woman who works in publishing, two library school students, and me. We met at the Fuel Coffee Shop on Capitol Hill at 7pm. There was buzz about a new book ABC3D by Marion Bataille. It's a pop-up book. Here's a YouTube preview! (release date October 2008) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wnZr0wiG1Hg

With so many books we decided to limit each person to three books next time. This time it was five or six per person!
